Lunch #97: Ugly Produce

Have you heard of ugly produce? Groceries stores sometimes sell bruised or misshapen produce at a reduced price. It keeps food out of the vicious food waste cycle. I also like that it retrains us to stop expecting every fruit or vegetable to look flawless in order to be considered nourishing.

I decided to buy some ugly produce last week when these peppers caught my eye. They looked healthy and delicious to me, just a bit misshapen.

Sure enough, they’re indistinguishable from any “normal” pepper once they’re cut up. I love preventing food waste—especially when it saves me money!
